does it all costs?
Below I
give some prices, which we paid to give an impression of how expensive Zimbabwe
is for foreigners. These are the prices of October 1st 1999. The
inflation is enormous, take that in account.
It is
important to know that they discriminate foreign tourists in Zimbabwe. For the
same product or service you will pay double to 30 times the amount that the
local people have to pay. They can’t justify that but as a tourist you can do
nothing about that. In the "Lonely planet travel survival kit" there
is a nice essay about this phenomenon and way it is reprehensible.
Rate (01-10-99): 1 Z$ = 5,5 cents Dutch fl.; 1 US $ = 2,07 DFl; 1US$ = 37Z$
There are coins of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 Z$. Papre money: 5,10,20,50
and 100Z$. The largest paper money is 100Z$ (2,10 US$) so when you have just
changed money you have a lot of papers in your pocket. And when you want to pay
with one of 100Z$ then they often ask you: don't you have smaller.....
