General information

Umfurudzi Safari area is a wilderness of 76.000 ha north of Harare. There are small hills and it is dry. There is a campsite and the owners (very friendly people) set out walking trails for over 30 km. Because there are no big cats (only one lion and a few leopards) it is relatively safe to wander around unarmed. Compairing with other parks there is not a lot of game here. It is all quietness and nature.

The road to Hippo Pools (the campsite) was bad and became very small. It was accessible with a normal car only in the dry period, in the wet period you need a 4X4.

The campsite is beautifully located at a riverbank with a few hippos in it. They build a veranda, to sit on and relax and watch the setting sun. On the other site of the river (outside the park) you hear the drums of a village nearby. There is no electricity and no phone: perfect to relax and enjoy nature.

The campsite is cut in two by a small river and they made a hanging bridge over it. (See picture). The campsite was safe, the banks were to steep for the hippo’s. At night we heard a lot of animals walking around our tent. I am not a hero, so when I must go to the toilet at night I waited for sunrise.

Once we made a night game drive with a pick-up-truck of the owners. It was very nice and exciting. We saw a Genet cat, an owl and a few bush baby’s (small sort of monkey). I can recommend it to everyone who will go there.

Diner was what the cook made. All together on a long wooden table. Nice.

The day that we left José found a 50 cm long needle of a Porcupine (Ystervark). That animal walked around our tent that night. A beautiful souvenir.

Almost the end of our holiday. The last night we spend back in Harare.
