General information about Bulawayo

Bulawayo is a big city (900.000 inh.) but it is friendlier than Harare. The streets are wide and the buildings low. There are also a lot of colonial buildings there.

The city is a good base to see the Matobo Park south of town. In this park you can find Cecil Rhodes grave, a lot of archeological dig ups like rock paintings, caves etc. Beside that there is also a wildlife area with the rare black rhino’s.

On the western side of the city are the Khami ruins, the second largest archeological site. It’s like Great Zimbabwe on the world inheritance list. It is smaller than Great Zimbabwe but it has some similarities.

I can recommend the Natural History Museum. They have 75000 stuffed animals, a load of information about the animals you will see in the game parks and a very informative part about mining. You need half a day to see this place. To relax afterwards you can walk in the park next to the museum.

After a long drive we arrived in Bulawayo. The road was good but boring. Now and than you can see people woodcarving on the site of the road. What do those people live in poverty…

We stayed in Berkeley place: a very friendly and clean hotel. They have a shop with souvenirs, which are all “fair trade”. Nice stuff and not expensive.

Bulawayo is a nice place to stay and to make a day trip to Matopos Park and that’s what we did.

31.jpg (46518 bytes) On the way we stopped at a lake near bulawayo. This was the drinking water for the city. It was almost empty...

First we drove to the game park of Matopos.
