In June 1997 we went to Namibia. It was a 17-day trip, a fly drive. We got a brand new Toyota Corolla Sedan from Avis and we drove through the country. The camping places and the hotels were reserved so the route was planned for us. Travel in this way isn't the best way to do that.

First of all not all the camping sites were reserved. The South African organization wasn't reliable they told us.

Second the journey was too short to see this large country. In 14 days we drove 4500 km. There are only 11 hours of light every day and driving in the dark is too dangerous. 3 weeks should be better for this journey.

The map shows which route we took. We started in the capital Windhoek. First we drove to the north to the Waterberg Plateau. We stayed for one night and went to the Etosha National Park. There we slept 3 nights on two different restcamps. Further we went to Khorixas were we stayed on a terrible campsite. Unfortunately this was the only camping site around so there wasn't much choice. Via Twijfelfontein and Skeleton Coast we arrived in Swakopmund. There they reservated a sandy camping place for us: Mile 4.

From Swakopmund we drove via Walvis Bay to Duwisib Castle. Because of the low temperatures at night we rented a room in a farm. We were the only guests so the whole farm was our home. Next to Grunau. We pasted Luderitz because we to tired of driving already. From Grunau we did a daytrip to the Fish River Canyon and drove a day later to Keetmanshoop and visited the Kokerboom Forest. The last day we drove back to Windhoek.
