Light wind and "close" finish: IJspegel 9

12-03-2006, Scheveningen (Ernst-Jan van Housselt)

The wind had backed down to a light ten knots since our practice runs in heavy wind on Saturday. After the start we soon suffered from some big shifts as we approached the shore line. The wind backed down more to absolutely zero only to return a few seconds alter from a very different angle. This would take a lot of concentration! The second run, after a close call at the upwind mark, we found ourselves amongst the top fifteen of the IMS fleet. We had a nice run downwind and finished second and seventh in corrected time. The 2nd race, with even less wind and a stronger current, we suffered a bad start. The same IMX 40 who troubled us at the start gave us a bad time during the second downwind run. After a brilliant maneuver overtaking the IMX40 and speeding downwind from the MaxFun35 we finished second, just able to keep the boat going by reaching tight courses. After finishing just meters before the rest of the fleet the wind died and other boats had to fight the current in almost zero knots wind. Our bad luck at the start was completely compromised by our good luck at the finish; the boats that were just meters behind us just before the finish weren’t able to cross the line earlier then ten minutes behind us. In calculated time we also  became second. What a day!
