Kata Tjuta, The Olgas

Kata Tjuta, The Olgas (NT)

Kata Tjuta, a group of gigantic sandstone outcrops, stands just over 30 km (19 mi.) west of Ayers Rock. Mount Olga, the tallest of the domes rises nearly 200 m (600 ft.) higher than Uluru.

The Valley of the Winds walk takes around three hours and winds through the gorges giving excellent views of the domes. You'll need sturdy footwear, a hat, plenty of drinking water and if your guide tells you to buy a fly net, do it.

This photo is taken at the Kata Tjuta Sunset Viewing Area, one hour before sunset.

Uluru, Ayers Rock (NT)

The heart of Australia, rises 348 m (1140 ft.) above the flat terrain of the Simpson Desert.

Take your time and make the Circuit Walk. It takes around three hours to make the walk around the base of Uluru. Discover the hidden secrets of the rock that is not just a rock.

It goes against Aboriginal spiritual beliefs to climb Uluru. Be proud you can buy the T-shirt:

Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon (NT)

Watarrka Natonal park's spectacular Kings Canyon is one of the Centre's most picturesque areas.

The Kings Canyon Walk is an excelent walk wich offers some stunning views. Allow at least four hours to complete the 6 km (3.7 mi) circuit back to the car park.

Make a short detour at the Garden of Eden on the northern edge of the canyon.

The walk is very popular, so it's a good idea to start the walk very early.

Palm Valley (NT)

The road to Palm Valley becomes extremely rough and rocky for the final 3 km (2mi.), you can only get here by a good 4WD car.

Palm Valley is famous for its large colony of ancient Red Cabbage Palm, which exists nowhere else in the world. The species has survived here for perhaps 10,000 years, and is a relic of a wetter age when central Australia was covered with tropical vegetation.

Take a two hour walk into this beautiful valley and enjoy the marvellous views.

Birds often seen are: Jacana, Magpie Goose, Australian Pelican, Great Egret, Eagles and the Jabiru.

Litchfield Park, Wangi Falls (NT)

Just 115 km. (71 mi.) south of Darwin is Litchfield Park. Four beautiful waterfalls, rainforest patches, unusual termite mounds, curious sandstone formations and a wide variety of fauna are the park's main attractions.

By far the most impressive waterfall is Wangi Falls, where high cliffs tower over a spacious pool of clear water fed by two waterfalls.
