After our Mediterranean sailing experience
last week the temperature differences did hit us quite hard. The sunny
16°C during the Primo Cup (Monaco) was a lot more pleasant than the
freezing temperatures in Holland. On Saturday we lifted the boat back
into the water and made her ready for the IJspegel on Sunday.
Although light winds were predicted the
wind was about 16 knots from the North. After a good start, we had some
trouble getting the boat into the groove. This was mainly caused by the
setting of the rig, which was set up for lighter winds. We rounded the
upwind mark in the pack, just in front of VanUden TUDelft (the other
mumm30). Downwind went really well, and we were second at the downwind
mark. Daikin increased their lead during the race, and we were able to
hold our second place till the finish.

The second race we had a bad start.
Despite of our encouragement the boats upwind to us refused to luff
(although they were obliged to do so), this resulted in us being locked
under a 40ft boat just after the start. We were able to hold on and had
a reasonable beat to the upwind mark (we changed the mast setting).
Downwind went well until the downwind mark. There we were third and
tried to overtake Maas at the mark. They closed the gap en we touched
their stern, resulting in some minor damages. Our mistake, so we had to
do two penalty turns. Rosseta and VanUden TUDelft passed us, but we were
able to retake the third position during the remaining of the race.
In the end we were 5th and 4th on
handicap, which gave us a 4th place overall. And since we sailed
with two substitutes and a mumm30 has quite a bad handicap in medium
wind, we were rather pleased with the result.
