All week the prediction for the weekend was light winds, and so it
happened.
Saturday there was a gentle breeze of 8 knots, which finally allowed us
to do some sailing. The last time we were on the water was 12th of
December. We practiced our boat-handling and did some speed trials with
vanUden-TuDelft.
Sunday the start was postponed for one and a half hour. Luckily a steady
6 knots enabled the committee to start. After a general-recall we were
on our way to the first mark. Our boat speed was good enough to hang on
to the 40ft boats, and we were second at the upwind mark. Downwind our
light displacement and large spinnaker proved its surplus value in light
winds. We made a good tactical move on the right and were first at the
downwind mark by almost three minutes. The wind shifted and the upwind
mark became a close haul reach.
The last downwind leg the wind decreased a bit, but we were still able
to maintain a steady speed. By now we lapped some boats in our class,
who were struggling to reach the first downwind mark.
Just before we finished the organization cancelled the race. Although we
weren't really happy with the decision (we certainly would’ve won), it
was good decision for the fleet.
Thus we started the engine and went back to the harbour. There we put
the boat on the trailer for our trip to Monaco next week.
