Saturday - shark warning !
Saturday was as usual a training day for Triple P. Together with Delft
and the V-one we did some speed trials in about 20 knots of wind.
Because Fezi and Marc were absent we borrowed some crew of Delft.
Suzanne took the helm and Ties did spinnaker trim. Together with Jeroen on tactics and the usual crew we were complete.
Prior to the training Joost used his diving gear to
take the rudder out, because we wanted to change the rudder bearings.
Joost also cleaned the bottom of the hull and entertained us with a
“Jaws” impression.
Sunday - downwind fun!
The expected heavy wind for the afternoon came a bit early, so when we
left the harbour there was
already a steady 20 knots of wind. The wind increased even more, so 7
minutes to the start we changed the medium genua for the heavy jib.
The
start was good, except from a small incident with the V-one. They tried
to tack in front of us, but ended up dead in the water on port tack. We
had right of way on starboard tack, but had to change course to avoid a
collision. The protest was handled on the quay with some beers.
We
were with the first ones at the upwind mark, and downwind we passed
several boats. The next
downwind course the wind further increased, and in full planning we were
first at the downwind mark. Unfortunately the speed display was absent
(since Fezi had it), so no new top speed. Upwind we lost a bit to the
much bigger 40-feet boats, but the last downwind leg we were on track
for line honours. Sadly the spinnaker pole fitting on the mast gave way
(yet again, as two weeks ago), and we broached. Because of this broach
we missed our gybe angle,
had
to drop the spinnaker,
and finished just on the mainsail. This resulted in a 3rd
place on handicap.
The second race we did not start. The wind further increased and because
the owner was absent, we didn’t want to risk the chance of any damage.
