European Championship: one top five finish

18-06-2006, Deauville (Ko Stroo)

After a nice evening practice on Wednesday we were ready for the first day of the European Championship. Thursday we had a reasonable day with a 14th, 17th, 14th and 11th place in the field counting 21 boats.

On Friday we wanted to continue our improvements of the day before, but the first race we had a bad start, because of a small problem with the running rigging. Ernst-Jan climbed the mast and was able to make a repair, but we were 3 minutes late on the starting line. With good speed and tactics we were able to catch 6 boats and finished 15th. The next two races we sailed a 9th and 14th place and the last race where we were second during half of it, we finished a spectacular 4th.

Saturday we had not a really good day, we had some trouble getting the boat up-to-speed. We sailed a 17th, 10th and 16th place, not to bad, but we had hoped for another top five finish.

The race on Sunday was cancelled due to a lack of wind. Overall we were 15th, the Dutch soccer team won with 0-1 from Serbia-Montenegro, and Joost was discharged from Hospital; thus we had a nice Sunday afternoon.

Asterix (GBR) won the European title by superiority, VanUden TUDelft was the best Dutch boat with an 8th place.

Our special regards go to; Miranda for cooking diner for us and vacuum cleaning the accommodation, Evert for replacing Joost at the last moment and Christiaan of VanUden TUDelft for driving our boat back to Holland.
