The
boat was transported to Stavoren on Sunday the 9th of April
for the Vetus spring races. We ourselves went back to Stavoren on Friday
the 14th to prepare the boat for racing. The boat was put
back into the water, the mast was fitted and we were ready to sail
again. Because the relative large distance between Rotterdam and
Stavoren we had a small apartment in the centre of the city in order to
spare us quite an amount of time travelling.
During the briefing on Saturday morning we proposed to change the course
from one lap into two, resulting in a bit more boat-handling during the
matches. Although sadly only six boats competed, all six skippers
luckily agreed with changing the course.
The
first match began with a bad start; Jurjen had some trouble assessing
the acceleration of the mumm30 in comparison with the J/22 he normally
sails. This has happened him only ones and all the other starts were
perfect. On Sunday we even managed to push Harry Amsterdam over the
line, forcing him into a false start. Harry Amsterdam with his brand new
Elan 37 "Yacht
Vision"
was also our biggest competition. On corrected time he has beaten us
several times, but on the water we got five line honours out of six
matches, and lost only one in a close call photo finish. At the last
mark of this match Yacht Vision did have quite a comfortable lead, but
in the last upwind leg before the finish we managed to fight our way
back to his tail. With a last very good tack we got out of his wind
shadow, but unfortunately lost on the finish line by only one second.
Although we have lost that match we are quite satisfied with our five
line honours in a mostly 40 foot fleet.
We
ended the Vetus spring races 2nd overall, just behind the
"Yacht
Vision".
We have had a really good weekend in which we got the practice we wanted
and also a bit of nice sailing.
