Primo Cup; three days of light winds and sunshine

13-02-2006, Monaco (Ko Stroo)

As is traditionally the Primo Cup opens the international mumm30 season. This year 17 competitors from France, England, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and off course the Dutch Team Triple P came to compete for the Trophée Credit Suisse.

Friday 10 February

We arrived at the harbour at 08:15, with a scheduled start at 10:00, we assumed we weren’t so early. But most French and Italian teams where nowhere to be seen. So we were first on the water, and used a small breeze for some warm-up sailing. Soon the wind died and the first regatta was postponed until noon when a small breeze did build up. We had a reasonable start, but had difficulties to hold our position. Downwind we were able to win some places on good boat-to-boat tactics by Jochem. At the end we came in 11th.

The second match the wind died completely during the second upwind leg. We managed to drift around the top mark, but were unable to reach the finish before it closed. We scored a DNF (did not finish) and motored back to Monaco at sunset.

Saturday 11 February

Luckily the wind held all day long, so we could sail three matches. The wind was really light and we had difficulties to get the boat up to speed. Eventually we did find an upwind trim setting in which the boat had good speed, but still we had some problems to hold high angles. Downwind we were quite fast above 6 knots of wind. When it dropped below the shape of our spinnaker made things very difficult. The first race we scored a 12th place. The second race was a lot better until we had to make a penalty turn because our spinnaker touched another boat, but still we managed to claim a 9th place. The last race we finished 12th in the sunset.

Sunday 12 February

After Joost cleaned the hull in his scuba set, we left the harbour again in light winds. After a short postponement we started our day with a 12th place in the first match. The second match we had a good upwind leg and were in third position at the top mark. Sadly we lost a lot downwind due to our poor performance under 6 knots downwind. We also made a mistake and had to make two penalty turns. Then the wind began to shift significantly and the race was shortened at the last top mark where we finished 14th. During the last race we had good first upwind leg again and this time we did hold our position to the finish; 6th place, our best result of the week.

Then the race began to the crane, every boat wanted to be first out of the water and on their way. Because our last result was good, we managed (with full throttle, of course) to be the first mumm30 out of the water.

Overall we finished the Primo Cup at a 13th place; Toulon Provence Mediteranee won the event.
