I have a 1967 TVR. As far as I know the model is 1800S Mk IV.
The car is registered as a 1967, the production number is 18107. I have owned my current car since 1970. In 1971 I drove
it to a season championship in autocross (or slalom) competition with the
Yankee Sports Car Club. I didn't have any trouble with the 240Zs, 914/2.0
Porsches or any other of the period cars. Since then just
"normal" use. About 1985 it got parked for some
"minor" maintenance. I just recently stepped up activity to get
it back on the road. And we are doing a pretty thorough job. Just short of
"frame-off". I was going to cut the body off, but closer
inspection revealed that there was a lot of bonding done on my car
!! The person that was in charge of bonding the body to the
frame must have been very enthousiastic. Just about everything
is bonded together. The frame seems to be sound. So we are just going
to clean and de-rust everything underneath. Just yesterday we tipped it up
on its side for better access to the underside.
Update on the restoration of my car as of Sept 2003. I was hoping
to have things going this summer. The last written I hadn't gotten a good
look at the frame. Well there was a lot of rusted tubing. I found the
transverse tube behind the seats to be the worst. However, by the time I got
done, just about all the lower lever tubes bonded to the floor pan were
replaced. Apparantly there was just enough capilary action to let the water
in and keep the area soaked. The frame is now completely repaired and
painted. The most challenging of this was replacing the curved differential
saddle mount. I have incorporated plates into the frame to re-mount
the body. Detailed pictures (hundreds, please don't ask for all) of all
this is availible to anyone that needs them. And, Oh yes, I found the
that frame number, stamped on the top of the motor
mount brackets, is 18-108 while the body ID plate says 18-107.
Curious but understandable. I am currently sanding the body for painting this
winter.
Here it is - February of 2005 and my
restoration project is still not done. But here's a little update.
The frame has been finished in black POR. All new Superflex suspension bushings
installed. The engine is built and installed. The transmission (a
5-speed conversion) is installed. The body has been painted and bolted in
place. Next step - interior.
