Voorwerp: muntgewichtje voor een Postulaatgulden van Jan van Hoorne, bisschop van Luik/Liege/Luttich 1484-1505. Kruisschild in driepas beladen met wapen met drie hoorns. Berekend massa 2.4 g. Genaamt Hornergulden of Hornekens in muntgewichtdozen en etiketten van 1586. Gemaakt bij LVG? Lenard van de Gheere? Nooit gezien in dit vorm. De Lenard Van De Gheere familie was vier generaties, van ca. 1495 tot 1621; ze heetten alle Lenard maar het was soms geschreven als Lenaert, of als Leonhard.
LVG I was benoemd tot eerste ijkmeester-generaal van het trooise gewicht voor de "Landen van Hervaertsover" (De Nederlanden) zoals het genoemd werd door het bewind in Spanje, Philips II (1556-1598) en mischien zijn vader, Karel V. Wij ken een muntgewichtje met een vuurijzer, dat hij alleen kon stempellen op de gewichten.(Ik weet het niet wie het is.) Dit was de vuurstal van de Bourgonders.
LVG II en zijn vader stierven in het selve jaar,
1577. Muntgewichten bekend met datum (15)77, geen ander jaar.
Dit was de tweede jaar dat Antwerpenaars diende jaren op de muntgewichten te
slaan.
LVG III woonde in de Doornickstraat oost, in Antwerpen, vanaf 1578 hij was ijkmeester-generaal van de Verenigde 17 Provincien; werkte tussen 1581 en 1585 ook bij de Zeeuwse Munt in Middelburg; vluchtte in 1585 naar Amsterdam en 1586 werd hij de eerste ijkmeester-generaal van Holland en West-Friesland.
Antwerpse muntgewichten zonder datum zijn van
voor 1577 en degene van (15)80 tot (15)84. hebben LVG en jaar. Ongedateerde
muntgewichten van Noord-Nederland vanaf 1586 tot zijn dood, voor 1598. Hoofdletter
L en staande leeuw. LVG IV geboren 1579
tot Antwerpen, werkte met zijn vader, gehuwd 1599. Hoofdletter L en staande
leeuw, gering verschillend, maar ik studeer dit sedert 6-7 jaren en weet het
antwoord. Ook vervaardiger van dozen muntgewicht (DeWaag Deventer, KPK Leiden,
Boerhaave Leiden, etc.) Gestorven 1621.
Bedrijf vervolgd bij zijn vrouw Maryken van de Weyer.

Voorwerp: muntgewichtje voor een kwart poun = 5 shilling. This is a muntgewichtje voor 1/4 Unite or Britain crown, all 73.3% that's left of it. In James I days 1603-1619 these were called unites instead of pounds. This does not show much on the obverse, but one could, at one time, see the crowned head of James I, to right. On the reverse, we see a countermark [klop] "crowned I", for James, a crown, a lily, and the value V S standing for 5 shillings. It had been suspected for some time that certain coinweights used in England were imitations. Nothing certain could be determined until Ritzo Holtman, the redakteur of Meten en Wegen, and I found a full box of weights of Guilliam de Neve, Amsterdam weight maker [dozen 1612-1652] with imitations of three English coinweights that looked like they had been made in England. Although these did not have the lily, all those with lilies are now considered Dutch imitations. Of course the authentication stamp "crowned I" was by the authorities, or was it? Lit. Engelse Muntgewichten gemaakt in Nederland, in Meten en Wegen, Maart 1999. Interesting find.

There are three different coins with the same beeldenaar on it. It seems they all fall into three groups, all by FRENCH kings:
(1) The coin known as Agnel (plural agneaux) was struck in the years 1311-22 by four French kings and it weighed between 4.20 and 4.14 grams at issue.
(2) The coins known as moutons d'or were all struck by Jan II de Goede in 1354/55 and they weighed 4.71 g at issue.
(3) The last of this series are called agnel or mouton, but they were only 2.55 grams at issue and were struck by king Charles VI (Le Fol, Het Nar).
All three groups had the lam met de vaandel, with or without the nimbus around its head. Based on the mass of 3.81 g for your weight, I believe it is of the first group, an agnel. Top condition agnel coins in auctions weighed 4.06 and 4.12 g. Recent auctions are by Schulman, Veiling 27-1351 and 28-2093-2097. Coinweight finds dateable to the 14th century reported by G M M Houben were 3.9 and 4.1 grams. [Lit. "Veertiende-eeuwse Muntgewichtdoosjes" in JMP, 1983, pp. 5-14]. Since there were imitations, such as for the larger moutons, by Johanna and Wenceslas of Brabant, Lodewijk van Male, and Willem V of Bavaria as count of Holland, the weights could also be used for them. All weights from Brugge are very rare.

Voorwerp: Gehakt muntgewichtje van Brugge voor
een Franse Ecu uit de 14e eeuw. Aan de voorkant 3 lelies in een wapenschild
en aan de achterkant niets. Gewicht: 4,28 gram.This is an especially rare muntgewichtje
from Brugge. They look very crudely made, but all have the beeldenaar (image)
inside a square (vierkant, kwadraat). This weight was made for the French ecu
a la chaise of the kings Philippe VI and Jean II de Goede around 1346. It was
made for a coin of the original mass of 4.53 grams, so this weight is still
94.5% which is remarkable for an item that was probably 600 years in the ground!!!

door onbekende maker D.B. in Antwerpen aan het einde van de 16e eeuw. Gewicht:
4,85 gram. This style of angel was used also on dated muntgewichtjes of Antwerpen.
Dating started in 1576, so this one is just a few years earlier. Mass is 93.6%
of mass of "engelot" which was originally 80 English grains or 5.184
grams.
