Los Campesinos! Paradiso, Amsterdam, February 25th, 2008
I arrived around 8 PM at the Amsterdam central station and Anneke and Marieke were already waiting at the tramstop. Funfact: When I was on my way to Amsterdam, my roommate called and asked if I'd be home soon because he locked himself out.. Well obviously I wasn't, so he decided to wait for our other roommate, poor thing!
Anyway, we arrived at Paradiso a bit too early so we killed some time at Ben & Jerry's. We were stubbornly ignored by the staff, so by the time we had finished our icecream the doors at Paradiso were wide open.
Then we waited for a bit... checking out the 90% scenester crowd, having a ridiculously expensive beer and taking silly photos...
Los Campesinos! started at 21:30 with shouting the intro of Broken Heartbeats Sound Like Breakbeats, it wasn't exactly clear if it was Dutch or German but it wasn't English! The stage was just big enough for the seven of them, 3 girls 4 boys and they all actually played something!
So I guess this is the point where I should tell you about my love-hate affair with Los Campesinos.. When I first started listening their music late 2006 (I think?) I really really liked them.. and then I listened to them a bit too much and this had no positive effect. And when the album leaked I started liking them again, but I was afraid of listening to it because I might stop liking them again!
Sooo this concert pretty much was a test for our relationship and I must say, they definitely passed. They seemed to be having fun on stage, everyone was yelling their songs along and even though I got a bit bored halfway, the ending was brilliant. There was a massive stage invasion and this seemed to bring things to a higher level. Gareth (the singer) joined the crowd and we were all one big family.
They even did an encore, which is something they never do (apparently) and it was a fun ending to a fun show.
