5 Days Off
Paradiso, Amsterdam, 12 juli 2006

So Wednesday was the first day of 5 Days Off festival, which is usually a dance festival, but this year turned out to be more band-orientated with Maxïmo Park, Infadels and Happy Mondays. Happy Mondays were playing in the Melkweg, but Maxïmo Park was the band we (Anneke & I) came for (in Paradiso).

Fortunately they were the first band of the evening, so we didn't have to wait long. I must say I was quite excited about seeing them again, even though it had only been 2,5 weeks or something since I last saw them at Hurricane. We had great spots on the left side, where we could see everything very well.

The first song they played wasn't Graffiti this time, but Signal & Sign, which was nice for a change. When Paul entered the stage we were slightly shocked: the white pants! Oh well...

Because we had already seen the setlist (© Anneke's pic), it wasn't much of a surprise but they played a really nice set, all the songs of the album (excl. Acrobat), some new ones (By The Monument, Nosebleed and A Fortnight's Time), I Want You To Leave (!), A19, Fear Of Falling.. Very very good.

(nice one Paul!)

Erm well I don't really know what else to say about it, they were brilliant again, but it wasn't as good as at The Music In My Head, which had mostly to do with the crowd, I think. There were lots of enthousiastic people there again, but not as much as then.

Is that a spare mic in your pants or are you just happy to see me? XD

They played for an hour and 15 minutes or something, included an encore of three songs, which is quite impressive if you realize that the setlist was a full A4-paper!

When they were finished, Anneke and I went to the small hall upstairs, because Shitdisco would play there. We waited for an hour, but there was no band to be seen.. I read somewhere later that they were doing a dj-set, because the band wasn't complete (or something?).. so we did see them after all, even though I had no idea where the music came from, so we didn't actually see them, but we did hear them, huh? ANYWAY. We stayed upstairs (after going to the toilets downstairs and walking around for a bit and seeing Willie Wartaal!) and watched Hot Chip from the balcony. They were nice, less electro-like than I expected, but good. It was already quite late so we left halfway, we said "If the next song isn't Over And Over, then we go" anddd Over And Over it was :D and then we left. Just in time to catch the last tram to Central Station. Hurrah.
