Meteora, Holy Trinity Monastry Meteora is a strange region filled with outcrops of giant rocks in the form of towers and pinnacles, ranging in height from 100 to 150 metres. Once a flourishing monastic community with 24 monasteries, Meteora now has only five occupied monasteries. They where first build in the 14th century by monks seeking isolation and spiritual salvation. The most remarkable
features of the monasteries are their domed roofs and wooden galleries. Of
the monasteries that are open to visitors today those of Varlaam,
Metamorphosis, Roussanos and Aghios Stephanos are veritable Byzantine
museums exhibiting among other things superb icons, old manuscripts and
unique mosaics and frescoes. |

Acropolis of Athens, The Caryatides Athens was first inhabited some 6000 years ago by Pelasgians and later by Ionians who found the great rock of the Acropolis, or Upper City as the name implies in Greek, a natural stronghold. As the city grew, it was dedicated and named after the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena. The Acropolis build on a 156 metre high limestone rock is clearly visible from any part of the city. The Erechtheio is
distinguished for the stately magnificence of the Caryatides, the young
priestesses who support the temple's roof with their heads. The Erechtheio
was a temple dedicated to the mythical hero-king Erechtheus (who was later
identified with Poseidon). The Athenians were told that in this place
Athena and Poseidon contested for the protection of Athens. Athena won, by
producing from the earth an olive tree. |
