SCHOONDIJKE

This village has already a long history.

In the year 1150 there was a place called 'Vulendijke' (vuile dijk= dirty dike)

In 1248 there's a place called Sconendica (schone dijk) near to Vulendijke.

After the inundation (1583 - 1585) the old village of Schoondijke disappeared.
On may 6th in 1652 a village called 'Willemsdorp' was founded in the
'Prins Willempolder' (named after stadhouder Willem II).
The name was changed into Schoondijke because of troubles with the rulers of the country.
During the reclamation of the "Prins Willempolder", a canal was created on the spot where the community 'Sasput' is situated nowadays.
The new lock was build later on.

In oktobber 1944 Schoondijke was mostly destroyed by Worldwar II.
The old market-place, the townhall, and many other buildings and houses were destroyed.
The reformed church from 1656 and the catholic church from 1844 were destroyed oktober 1944
The village was rebuilt after the war.
In 1950 they built a new catholic church

Nowadays Schoondijke is a village as part of the municipal "Oostburg".
