HOOFDPLAAT

is situated on a place which was formerly known as 'Gaternesse'.
In 1778 they build new dikes for the 'Hoofdplaatpolder'. Between these dikes
at the east-side of the 'polder' there is 'Hoofdplaat'. It is the youngest
village of 'ZeeuwsVlaanderen'.

The first habitants of 'Hoofdplaat' were mostly Belgian people, because they
were workers who helped building the dikes of the 'Hoofdplaatpolder'.
In 1780 a 'Hervormde Kerk' (protestant-church) was build. The inauguration
was in 1785, on may 29.
A second church was build, which was a Roman-atholic church, called 'St.Eligius'.
This one was ready in 1795 and was restorated in 1861.

The last mayor of 'Hoofdplaat' was J. Temmerman.
He was mayor from 1941 untill 1966.

The communities : 'Hogeweg' - 'Slijkplaat' - 'Nummer Een' were also part of
the 'gemeente Hoofdplaat'.
'Nummer Een' is named to the number-one-parcel ('kavel') of the'Hoofdplaatpolder'.

Nowadays 'Hoofdplaat' and it's communities are part of the 'gemeente Oostburg'.
